And I think it's gonna be a long, long time

Happened to watch a current affairs tv programme on channel 8 last night. The topic was on how the media and general public slammed this year's Miss Singapore contestants and labelled them as Ah Lians. Well, maybe, just maybe that wasn't a fair statement and calling them Ah Lians is over-generalising. They're mostly just hideous. Anywayyy... so the winner, first runner-up and second runner-up were interviewed for the programme and asked about their feelings and reactions on the harsh criticisms.

Winner Sandy Chua said something about how it doesn't bother her much because those people who had a case against the pageant girls didn't know them personally and without any form of interaction with someone you can't judge if they possess grace and all that stuff.

First runner-up whatever-her-name-is replied in awfully-pronounced English, "I am a very confident girl, and i have a tertiary education. I hold a diploma and a degree. So what about me that is so Ah Lian I don't understand".

And when asked for her definition of an Ah Lian, the snotty thing offered, "Someone who's not very highly educated".

Okayyy... so belonging to some institute of higher learning spares you from being an Ah Lian, it could be University of Kota Tingi for all we care. And holding several pieces of certificates means you're of a different breed and standing. No doubt calling them Ah Lians is not a very justifiable thing to do, and to begin with, what is an Ah Lian? But so fucking what if you've received an education? Everyone goes to school and these days, almost anyone can be a degree holder. If anything, it's just a measure of one's academic capabilities and has nothing to do with x-factor, elegance, wits, sophistication, whatfuckingever.
